Whirlwind Weekend

Look at wedding cakes, celebrate a friend's birthday until 3 am, up at 9, nails, meet clients, shopping, dinner with friends then a walk into the wee hours, up at 9, bris, brunch, pool, rest, anyway, parents, walk on the bay, read and I'm out!

Walking

I love walking. Ever since I was a kid, I always walked a lot, usually with my dad. We went "zagorod" and walked for miles. As I grew up, taking a walk was a way for me to meditate, to take my mind off things, to clear my head. It's my exercise since I don't run and more often than not it's my salvation. People don't understand it and I have often been yelled at for "walking around" but I love it and here are some thoughts on the topic:

If you are seeking creative ideas, go out walking. Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk. -Raymond Inmon

A vigorous five-mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world. -Paul Dudley White

Me thinks that the moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow. -Henry David
Thoreau

The true charm of pedestrianism does not lie in the walking, or in the scenery, but in the talking. The walking is good to time the movement of the tongue by, and to keep the blood and the brain stirred up and active; the scenery and the woodsy smells are good to bear in upon a man an unconscious and unobtrusive charm and solace to eye and soul and sense; but the supreme pleasure comes from the talk. -Mark Twain

Thoughts come clearly while one walks. -Thomas Mann

Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. -Soren Kierkegaard

People say that losing weight is no walk in the park. When I hear that I think, yeah, that's the problem. -Chris Adams

How can you explain that you need to know that the trees are still there, and the hills and the sky? Anyone knows they are. How can you say it is time your pulse responded to another rhythm, the rhythm of the day and the season instead of the hour and the minute? No, you cannot explain. So you walk. -Author unknown, from New York Times editorial, "The Walk," 25 October 1967

The best remedy for a short temper is a long walk. -Jacqueline Schiff

Walking takes longer... than any other known form of locomotion except crawling. Thus it stretches time and prolongs life. Life is already too short to waste on speed. -Edward Abbey, "Walking"

It might be genetic, since my dad has walked his whole life and my grandma to, while she was able to. Whether it is or not, give me a pair of comfortable shoes, a friendly companion, a telephone or just my own thoughts and I will walk and walk. To the train and from, during lunch and to a sample sale across town.

Endurance

My friend Kate gave me a book to read a few weeks ago, but because it's a hardcover, I was hesitant to carry it back and forth on the train. Well, Friday I finally took it with me and by 1 am this morning, I was done. I read the entire novel on one breath and simply could not put it down. Laced with historical events spanning the last 50 years, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is a novel about endurance and the human heart's unlimited capacity to love. A person can endure so many hardships both physical and emotional, yet go on living, loving and even having children.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is about forgiveness, about war, about revenge, about children and about rebuilding and starting over. I highly recommend this novel to everyone who's loved, who's lost, who went on. It will also give the reader a very different perspective on "the war on terror" that we've been fighting since 9/11. Kite Runner by the same author is next on my list.

A girl like me

That's an alias for one of the contributors to a blog I follow, but what does it mean? She's quirky and neurotic? She is smart but doesn't live up to her full potential? She's pretty, but not beautiful? She's normal weight, but not thin. She would rather read a book than watch TV? She knows what she wants out of life and is determined to get it? She's a hopeless romantic but hates sappy chick flicks? She complains a LOT, usually not intentionally? She is loyal and puts others before herself? She has great taste and a bruised ego? She needs attention more than air? She has red hair which changes with the seasons and huge green eyes? She will always help a friend in need? She's creative and has a "good eye", but hasn't found her outlet yet? Etc. Etc. Etc???

How can someone's personality be summarized in a few sentences, especially someone as multifaceted as a girl like me? "We're all unique, just like everyone else" and I'm not more like her than she's like me...

Random Thought #385264

Mark and Lily's wedding proved to be a success and I have made new contacts that will hopefully bring me future clients and if not, they were great people to meet. Besides, if nothing else I'm getting PhotoShop lessons out of it. As with every wedding there are always things that go wrong, that I will not dwelve into the details here since Lily is a close friend for many years and I was a bridesmaid (I think there's a code against that, similar to "what happens in Vegas....)

Either way, I think Lily and Mark have set the bar for all future weddings that I attend - they truly enjoyed their wedding! My wish for Lily and Mark is to remain with the same smile from ear to ear throughout their lives and to dodge all of life's curveballs hand in hand. There was a moment that juts out from my memory to epitomize their wedding - as we were adjusting Lily's dress and pinning her tail, she couldn't wait to run back inside because, "I don't want to miss it.". Mazel Tov, guys! Health, love and respect is my wish for you both!
